GAPS

The Bonesetter's Daughter is the fourth novel written by Amy Tan, which was published in 2001. The novel again talked about the women in early twentieth-century China, the deep differences between generations and between cultural gaps in immigrant families.
As for me, the novel is like a mirror.
When I was reading this book, I was feeling I was standing in front of a mirror. It makes me feel like Amy is standing in front of me and talks me about her mother’s and grandmother’s mother. Besides Amy Tan, I saw me. When I was reading, some dialogues between Ruth and Luling stroke me. Sometimes I would feel, "Yeah, that's me!" "Yeah, that's totally what my mother would say!" In my recording, I was always complained as doing things wrong by my mom. She believes that if she did not guide me, my future will be influenced and be full of bitterness. Young as myself don't understand her way of expressing love. The only thing I know is that I hate these kinds of commands and complains. Everyday, every minute, I beg for freedom. I want these endless nagging disappeared forever. So the conflictions and gaps between us never disappeared. My attitude is "Your eyes always focus on my faults, my mistakes and you can seize any of them the whole day. You never take notice of my well behaviors, my progress. Even good grades can't make you satisfied!" And my mother's attitude is totally conversed " What I have done is all for your good. You know nothing. You are so ungrateful!" For the sake of these two different minds, I was beat 3 times a week, blamed 3 times a day and I could say nothing, otherwise I would be punished more.
The two figures in the mirror are twins in some aspects. I do learned a lot from Amy Tan. It's the first time I wanna to know my mother deeply, I wanna go into her heart instead of fighting back. I believe that, one-day, the gap between us will disappear. Because she is the only person in the world who knows me most, love me most. She teaches me how to love and how to be loved…

I appreciate this beautiful, also, this beautiful book…

LIFE IS CONFUSED

I used to think about “why me”, this question has confused me for a long time. Why I was determined to be myself, why I was born by my parents, not others, and why I was not my friend and my friend was not me either. These series of questions confused me a lot like an endless spiral. Of course, before the time I began to learn about gene and biology.
Life is a dictionary made up of different vocabs. Life is a encyclopaedia, everything was new for you when you were a infant, then more you look over it, the more familiar you will be with it. Life is like an allegory, you will always accomplish something from each story of your life and others’.

Book review of Animal Farm

I was deeply reflected and motivated after reading "1984" written by George O'well. Such motivation makes me try to learn everything about such author and this is why  I found "Animal Farm " and read about it. I was to superficial and naive to assume this book will be talking about animal lives when I first saw it. After reading Animal Farm, I was surprised to find the shining talent of the author. I have to recognize that George Orwell’s word is so sharp and his view is so original.  Then I began to realize George will always surprise and educate people by his intellectual imagination and creation on critical writing. Animal Farm is an allegorical novel that reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalin era in the Soviet Union.
George's  vision of politic is so keen that it straight leads this book to success. Actually, what describes in the novel happens in the history of the world and acts the same way of our daily life today, doesn't it? The book tells us a fable which is worth thinking over and over again. The animals had strong dissatisfaction with the famers so under the lead of the pigs, though the revolution, they drove the original owner Jones away. Napoleon and Snowball  became the core leadership. They reformed their leading mechanism in order to cash their promise that “All animals are equal!” At first, they indeed had some wonderful days. They lived equally and happily. However, the peaceful days didn’t last long. The contradiction between leaders became sharper and sharper. After a series of politics changes, the animal farm could find their animalism back. The saying all the animals are equal, but some are even more equal. Animal’s life became harder. But as the result of their blind worship of Napoleon, they couldn’t think calmly. All they knew was to work harder. As you can imagine, the ending of animal farm is obvious.  In my opinion, the book’s art value is as significant as its society value. The author criticized the reactionary politics of socialism countries, especially Si Dalin’s dominant in Russia. Though living in a socialism country, I have to recognize that some socialism countries have their disadvantages indeed. Take Russia as a typical example. There’s no doubt that the unequal things were always happened and most of the people had expected Si Dalin a lot in Russia. Maybe in their opinion, Si Dalin’s words were truths, Si Dalin’s thoughts were orders. As a result, they forget their original intention of revolution. No one can deny that it was the sadness of a whole people.  Politic is an abstruse problem for us students to talk. However this book makes the complicated question into a simple fable. It is really a successful and meaningful work!

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU

The only sentence I can remember, after read the book <<1984>>, is nothing but "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU".  Such a simple but powerful sentence strongly supports the control made by government and brainwash it has done upon the citizens. In the novel, people who live in the nation of Oceania, everywhere they go, even their own home , the Party watches them through tele screens; everywhere they look will see the face of party's seemingly omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. This living condition is just like put cameras every corner of you home and makes people defect you all the time, which sounds ridiculous and creepy. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even the people’s history and language. People like Winston Smith  lives in such conditions, he works for the party in the Ministry of Truth, where he alters historical records to fit the needs of the Party.  Winston feels frustrated by the oppression and rigid control of the Party, did not surrender but fought against this party. Unfortunately,  suffering from  suspicions and powerful autocracy, He has accepted the Party entirely and has learned to love Big Brother finally.

The ministry of truth, the department owns a name which totally different from its real meaning; a department that rewrites and counterfeits history, has three rules:

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
 IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
These three rules shows how the nation works, and reflects that "1984" is not talks about a year but a society which is choking and depressing. This society makes me think about China back to about 50 years. It had a similar party and nation likes the Oceania. At that time,  a cultural revolution was spread out to the whole China, which was a comprehensive reform movement in China initiated by Mao Zedong in 1965 to eliminate counterrevolutionary elements in the country's institutions and leadership. It was characterized by political zealotry, purges of intellectuals, and social and economic chaos. Teachers cannot teach, students lost their obligation to study, and learning was shame and awful. people got brainwash at that time, exactly as what happens in the novel. Today, those Social commentator analysis this movement and assert that it makes the development of China fall behind at least thirty years. It is a profound lesson that warns contemporary people to think about it and never make the same mistake.

"1984"  is written in 1948. In my opinion, the author is a prophet who can predict the future within all totalitarian rule. "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU " is not only a typical signal goes through the whole story but also a significant warning that he tries to pass to the future generation.

Comments on a Tale of Two Cities

Crazily, but truthfully, I finished reading the most part of the novel "A Tale of Two Cities" in a short time. Lost in the story, I felt like being together with the characters and experiencing the same exciting events. Soon it came to an end. To tell you my feelings, it’s infinite saddened a strong emotion that can drive me to cry.
Actually, the novel is full and gets more exciting as it comes to the end. This classical book is like a stream that seriatim together in the beginning and finally becomes a great river pentium. For example, the most prominent is the chapter 6 of section 2 which talks about hundreds of people, this section is so amazingly intact that can be considered as another new story because the complex relationship between doctor Manette can not be seen till the end of this whole section.  There is no doubt that the last two chapters is the climax, the most exciting part, it makes me think about and feel the revolution back to that time, the society was chaotic and people all lost their right and freedom, maybe these are the fundamental reason that lead to so many tragedies of this novel at that time.
The novel has portrayed many different people. An interesting and meaningful thing is to distinguish characteristics among these different people. Doctor Manette is honest and kind but suffers the persecution. Actually, Lucie is beautiful and gentle, Charles is graceful and noble Lorry is upright and honest, Sydney is semblance of indifferent, innermost feelings of warm and unconventional but also selfless and lofty. Miss Pross is straightforward and loyal; Evremonde brothers are cruel and sinister. The complex hatred is hard to solve, the cruel revenge has made more hatreds, loves rebirth in the hell edge, but take the life as the price.
Today, Lucie Manette would by no means be taken seriously as a believable, even likable character. She persists in fainting at particularly stressful moments, but when her husband is before a heartless, bloodthirsty jury, she looks brave and strong just for him. In context, this was a screaming contradiction, but one that Dickens required to portray his Eve. It is much easier to believe Madame Defarge's hate than her opposition's love. Defarge's sister was raped and murdered mercilessly and a pair heartless “noblemen” killed her brother. It is much easier to understand Defarge's taste for blood than the condition of Manette, who, after practicing as a competent doctor and acting normally for years, experiences a recurrence of his mental condition simply because his wonderful daughter has left for two weeks, although he has two dear friends nearby.
Charles Dickens has built an enduring story enjoyed by millions, which is loved by experts and critics today although it would be immediately butchered if written by a modern author. It is a love story loved by its creator, but wholly unbelievable. It is actually doomed by its own idealism and unrealistic characters. As a hate story, it is much more competent, although also using this for its own purposes. One can draw one's own conclusions and ideas from such a book, but facts will always be facts.

(This is the movie I found from youtube based on the hover"a tale of two cities" which can helps understand the society situation during French Revolution better )

Love in The Tale of Two Cities

“For you, and for any dear to you, I would do anything. If my career ware of that better kind that there was any opportunity of capacity of sacrifices, I would embrace any sacrifice you and for those dear to you. ” I was deeply touched by this words said by Sydney Carton as the cordial confession to Lucie Manette. These words moved me as a magnificent history, a moving story, and a pure and noble love.
This is "A tale of two cities”, it is written by Charles Dickens, as one of his most important representative works. The novel profoundly exposed the society contradiction before the French Revolution, intensely attacks the aristocratic social class is dissolute and cruel, and sincerely sympathizes with the depressed classes. But what is more attractive to me is the pure but cordial love that Sydney gives to Lucie in such a turbulent time, as Dickens describes, the times which is best and worst, wise and fool; it is the epoch of belief and incredulity; it is the season of light and darkness; it is the spring of hope but also the winter of despair. This love given by Sydney in such a special time is a light spot of the whole novel.
Undoubtedly, the lawyer assistant, Sydney Carton is the character who is the most touching one and is my favorite character. He starts with a melancholy appearance and is always frustrated and disappointed, cold and desolate since he first appears in the novel. He compromises almost everything  in the surrounding environment, but sometimes is totally different from the the general mood of the whole society. As a lawyer assistant, he is talented but is willing to hide his wisdom and would like to give up many chances to get success but gives this  chances to others.  He looks very similar to Charles Dickens because he is also deeply in love with Lucy, yet both fate is different.  He was once jealous of  and hate Charles. But after the torment of pain,  He still loves Lucie with a sincere blessing  because he realizes that "love is much more powerful than hate".  Sydney Carton, the guy who looks lazy and indulgent superficially,  actually has a pure and soft mind.
Although the novel ends with unexpected "happiness”, I feel sad and regret after reading it. Some people say that love is selfish, but in dickens' a tale of two cities, I have deeply felt a detached pure and noble love. This kind of love is always hidden in the deep corner of the heart. It is menial and suffers in silence, the only goal this love wants is to make the person who is loved be happy; It is always selflessly endow without return. This love in virtually risen to a new level, there are beautiful and charming luster given in such love forever and ever.
